Work Hard Pray Hard
I remember being in college and thinking I want to be on air (TV) so bad! That was pretty much all I could think about, and the hardest part of the career path I chose was how to make that dream a reality.
Now I am not one of those people who wants to be famous, although I would love to reach a lot of people and more than anything make a difference in their lives. For me I feel like being on TV is the path I am supposed to take to make that difference. God is always a step ahead of me, so though I feel lost a lot of the time, I know I am always right where I am supposed to be.
If I had 1 grand piece of advice on how to get on TV this would be it, INTERN! Now when I say that I mean intern at a place that values and teaches their interns (no coffee runs / errand person) and then take full advantage of it!
Also, #2 NEVER EVER SAY "I want to be on AIR" when you are interning, because if that is all you are focused on odds are people will think, "look at this noob who doesn't even know what it takes and thinks she can just jump on TV." You don't gain respect or experience that way.
Some of my best times at a TV Station so far haven't been on TV. It's been learning a new editing technique, or learning how to produce, or writing a great sports story. There are so many aspects to this business and I am enjoying learning new things every day.
Do I love being on TV? YES! But what I love more is what being on TV allows me to do, talk to people.
Honestly though the power of prayer cannot be discounted ever! You can do all the work you want and land a job on TV, but without prayer it will never be the perfect job or the job you love.
God provides when you least expect it and I thank Him all the time for the amazing job with the great hours and nice co-workers that I get to enjoy everyday.
So if you are that person in that college class wondering how am I ever going to get on TV. Try actually working on being a well rounded journalist. Pick up a camera, learn how to edit, talk to anyone and everyone in the news room. Find anchors and reports whose style you like and ask them to help you (but keep your own flare). Find directors and audio operators and assignment desk people that will teach you their jobs too.
Trust me the more you know how to do on your own the more any news station out there will want you. Also the more you're on air the more stalkers and critics you'll have so have a thick skin, learn from the criticism, but don't take it to heart, use it to grow.
Know though that this business is tough! People will try and stop you and tell you that you're not good enough. If you want it bad enough though, and keep working hard and praying hard, those people, those road blocks will disappear.
I am so thankful to the people at WTKR that took time out to mold me when I worked there, and I am so thankful now to the people at WSET that are constantly helping me grow and get better!
